Upgrade your Cirro server installation with these steps. Cirro recommends you use a sudo group user rather than root to improve security.


These steps guide you through the Cirro server upgrade. You’ll start by downloading the installer from your Cirro account, then copy the file to your server.

Additionally, you can download and install SCP and SSH applications on the source computer (such as WinSCP and Putty on Windows).

Before You Start

Follow these instructions to protect customized configuration files from being overwritten in an upgrade.

Download installer

  • Login to your Cirro account, click Account then download the installer.

Upgrade Cirro

These steps guide you through the upgrade process. You’ll connect to the server then create a new sudo group user (if required), verify settings then run the upgrade script.

To begin, SSH to your Cirro server.

Setup user with escalated privileges

If you haven’t already done so, connect to your server machine using your SSH application.

You’ll perform all these commands as root.

sudo su -

Use these commands to create a new user. Substitute your own name for “cirrouser” if desired.

Description Prompt Command
Create the user (substitute your user for “cirrouser”) adduser cirrouser
Fill in prompts: Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
Fill in any of the following prompts: Changing the user information for cirrouser
Enter the new value, or press ENTER for the default
Full Name []:
Room Number []:
Work Phone []:
Home Phone []:
Other []:
Enter Y when prompted: Is the information correct? [Y/n] y
Add the user to the sudo group usermod -aG sudo cirrouser
Switch to the new user su - cirrouser
Test sudo privilege.
The root directory should be displayed
sudo ls -la /root

Verify Settings

Some settings need verification to ensure the upgrade is successful.

Description Command
Switch to a user with escalated privileges. In this example we’re using “cirrouser” su - cirrouser
Open the root directory, then check Cirro is setup correctly. cd /
Enter this command if the results are NOT /opt/cirro export CIRRO_HOME=/opt/cirro

Copy installer and upgrade

You’ll need your Cirro installation password and postgresrootpassword from your original installation to complete installation.

Description Command
Copy the installer file then untar. tar xvf cirro_install_ent.tgz
Open cirro_dem cd cirro_dem
Run the installer script. sudo ./cirro_install_dem.sh –dir /opt/cirro –upgrade

If the installation is successful, you’ll see this message on-screen.

Installation completed successfully. Web console available at https://yourservernamehere
